Day 120

Easter Eggs!

Easter Eggs!

My mum sent a parcel for the hubby’s birthday (which is on Monday) and in the parcel there was a surprise… South African easter eggs!!!! Mmm these bring back so many childhood memories! And not only were there easter eggs, she also sent us homemade Rusks (or “Rocks” as the hubby calls them) 😀

From Wiki: “Rusks is the anglicized term for (Afrikaans: beskuit) and is a traditional Afrikaner breakfast meal or snack. They have been dried in South Africa since the late 1690s as way of preserving bread, especially when travelling long distances without refrigeration. Their use continued through the Great Trek and the Boer Wars through to the modern day. Rusks are typically dunked in coffee or tea before being eaten. Rusks are essentially double-baked bread dough. Round balls of dough are closely packed in pans and baked like bread, after which long chunks are cut or broken off and slowly rebaked to a dry consistency. In addition to plain and buttermilk flavours, aniseed, wholewheat, condensed milk, muesli and lemon poppyseed variations are also available.”

This is what they look like:

So of course we had rusks and tea as a snack before even thinking about dinner!! 🙂

    • No they are in New Zealand as well 🙂 Thank goodness! I don’t think I could be half a world away from my parents, would be so hard. I don’t quite know how my parents manage being so far away from their parents, I guess my sister and I need to be so thankful for the sacrifices they made for us! Mum makes the “rusks” herself and she must have got the easter eggs from the international section in the supermarket im guessing 🙂 x

      • That is lovely to have them in NZ with you. Yes I don’t think I could be away from my parents either!
Parents make such sacrifices for their kids don’t they?!
The rusks sound lovely, and so great your mum made them! 🙂 x
